I’m optimistic that many things in the video are safe bets. I agree that for millions of people around the world, things will change for the better at an accelerated rate over the next 15 years.
Technology is playing it’s part, it is a video from Bill Gates after all, but it will require huge investments of time and money from philanthropic organisations like The Gates Foundation as well as governments around the world.
It’s easy to watch the news and forget that, on a global scale, the world is getting more peaceful. The video takes that a little further:
We believe in the coming years that people will expand their circle of compassion, from their family and their clan to their country, their region and the world.
That’s something that we’re betting on too. There’s a reason that we use Stripe as our payments processing company: they process payments globally, with a huge number of currencies and are already working with things like Bitcoin that enable giving that doesn’t depend on your location, your nationality or even the currency you use day-to-day.
As millions more people get online, we can provide an infrastructure that promotes teaching, learning, giving and respect. The internet can seem like a pretty bad place sometimes, but if we work together we can do an overwhelming amount of good. How will the things you’re doing online today improve things over the next decade?
We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next 10.
